History

David Ring and Job Doornberg after successful defense of their PhD theses in Amsterdam.

The history of the MGH-Holland Combined Orthopedic Research Program is filled with remarkable milestones and the tireless efforts of visionary individuals. As we delve into our past, we celebrate the contributions of those who have shaped the program into what it is today. In 2003, the MGH-Holland Combined Orthopedic Research Program was established, bringing together the orthopedic surgery departments of two prestigious institutions, Massachusetts General Hospital and University Medical Center Amsterdam. This collaboration fostered an environment of excellence, enabling the program to attract some of the brightest minds in the field of orthopedics.

Among the notable individuals who played a pivotal role in the early days of our research program are Prof. Dr. Job Doornberg and Prof. Dr. David Ring. These visionary surgeons recognized the importance of research in advancing the field of orthopedics and improving patient care. They became the first two individuals to pursue their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees within the MGH-Holland Combined Orthopedic Research Program.

Their commitment to research and their drive to improve patient outcomes set the stage for the vibrant research culture that exists within the MGH-Holland Combined Orthopedic Research Program today. Their early achievements inspired countless other residents, fellows, and faculty members to pursue research opportunities, leading to a flourishing environment of inquiry, collaboration, and innovation.

Since the pioneering efforts of Prof. Dr. Job Doornberg and Prof. Dr. David Ring, our research program has continued to grow and expand. We are proud to have trained numerous exceptional orthopedic surgeons and researchers, many of whom have gone on to make significant contributions to the field.

As we reflect on our history, we remain deeply grateful all those who have contributed to the success of the MGH-Holland Combined Orthopedic Research Program. Their dedication, passion, and commitment to advancing orthopedic knowledge have left an indelible mark on our program's legacy. As we move forward, we embrace the spirit of exploration and innovation that has been the hallmark of our program from its inception. We remain steadfast in our commitment to conducting groundbreaking research, training the next generation of leaders, and making a lasting impact on orthopedic care.

Join us as we continue to shape the future of orthopedic research, inspired by our rich history and driven by a shared vision of excellence.
