Tom de Groot
Research Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital-Harvard Medical School
December 2021 – May 2023
I would say that Boston is one of the best places in the world for academic and personal growth. The motivating environment will inspire everyone to make the most out of their time.
As a research fellow, you receive the opportunity to mentor and inspire students in medical research, while gaining leadership skills. In addition, you get to upgrade your presentation skills by the many research events that are organized by MGB/HMS each year. Additionally, you can visit conferences from all over America to share your research with your peers. Speaking at these conferences will improve your presentation skills, but also expand your knowledge and understanding of the subject through valuable and engaging discussions.
You also get to forge powerful friendships. The Dutch student community in Boston is huge, and everyone works out together to clear their minds at the end of the day. Also, my house on Appleton St. has become iconic among Dutch students for having the best “stoopborrels” of the South End. Enjoying a good glass of wine and a proper conversation on the stoop in the sun and working out together have been the activities that helped me find a healthy balance between work and relaxation, which is essential for optimal performance in a demanding environment.
In summary, my research fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital-Harvard Medical School was a journey of discovery and growth. I not only expanded my knowledge of orthopedic oncology, but also developed my critical thinking, leadership skills and self-awareness. I am grateful for the amazing people I collaborated with, and I am confident that this experience will have a lasting impact on my career as a medical researcher.
